The Toy Box Montagu Car Expo Raises R9,000+ for Charity

Montagu has never needed much of an excuse to throw open its doors, and on Saturday 17 October 2026 it found a very good one. Local collectors rolled their prized classics into The Toy Box on Kohler Street for a one-morning-only classic car show, and by the time the last visitor left, the event had raised over R9,000 for Montagu Cares, one of the town's hardest-working community charities.

It was the kind of morning that sums up life on Route 62: shiny chrome, friendly faces, families with cameras out and a whole town rallying behind a good cause. Here is what happened, why The Toy Box has become one of Montagu's favourite venues, and how to turn your next visit into a full Robertson wine valley weekend.

What Is The Toy Box in Montagu?

The Toy Box is a large, high-roofed hall at 8 Kohler Street in the heart of Montagu. Its timber trusses, mint-green walls and long concrete floor make it the perfect home for classic cars, and on show days the space is packed bumper to bumper with everything from Volkswagen Beetles to American cruisers and modern Italian exotica.

It is also fast becoming one of the town's go-to event spaces. In April 2026 it hosted the Hanepoot Brass Band, and it set the scene for the Art Deco-themed Montagu Harvest Long Table, where 250 guests sat down to dinner surrounded by local wines. We couldn't find any advertised public opening hours, so special events like this car show are your best chance to see inside.

The Montagu Classic Car Show: A Morning of Chrome and Community

The show ran from 09h00 to 13h00. Tickets were just R30 a person, and every cent went to Montagu Cares. Collectors from in and around Montagu brought out their classics and opened the doors to the public for one morning only, with an open invitation to come and look, bring the family and take plenty of photos.

The Cars on Display

Visitors wandered between rows of beautifully kept machines. Highlights included:

  • Classic Volkswagen Beetles in buttercup yellow and turquoise, gleaming like the day they left the factory

  • A two-tone 1950s American classic in sky blue and white, with plenty of period chrome

  • A red Ferrari convertible parked alongside a bright yellow sports car, for those who prefer their classics a little faster

  • Vintage bakkies, elegant classic saloons and a motorbike or two, many with info sheets on the windscreen telling their story

Over R9,000 Raised for Montagu Cares

With the R30 tickets adding up through a busy morning, the car show raised more than R9,000 for Montagu Cares. The non-profit was started by the Montagu community during the 2020 lockdown and today supports people in need across the town through poverty relief, emergency help, basic shelter, skills development, a school-based drop-in centre and holiday programmes for local children.

It is a fine example of how Montagu does things. Whether it is a long-table dinner, a brass band concert or a hall full of classic cars, events at The Toy Box keep finding ways to give back to the community that makes this little Klein Karoo town so special.

Why Montagu Belongs on Every Route 62 Road Trip

For petrolheads and road-trippers, Montagu is a natural stop. It sits on Route 62, about two and a half hours from Cape Town, just through the dramatic Kogmanskloof pass from Ashton. The town is famous for its Art Deco streetscapes, hot springs, dried fruit and mountain scenery, and it makes the perfect base for exploring the Robertson wine valley. There are always plenty of things to do in Montagu, from galleries and cafés to hiking, and the vineyards of the Langeberg are right on the doorstep.
