Nestled in the picturesque Robertson Valley, Van Loveren Family Vineyards is a shining example of South African winemaking heritage, passion, and warm hospitality. Established in 1937, this iconic estate grew from humble beginnings to become the country’s foremost family-owned winery. It is celebrated for award-winning wines, innovative practices, and a genuine family welcome that makes every visitor feel part of the Retief clan.

Whether you are planning a day trip from Cape Town along Route 62, joining a wine safari, or seeking a family outing with children and pets, Van Loveren offers an experience to remember. As the current Winery of the Month at Kupenda Africa Gallery in Montagu, it complements the hospitality you enjoy with Wine Valley Safari tours. Our Classic Golden Mile Wine Valley Safari, Golden Mile Deluxe Wine Valley Safari, Golden Ticket VIP Wine Safari, Cap Classique Experience, and private custom voyages often include stops at estates such as Van Loveren, where stories, wines, and landscapes come together.

This comprehensive visitor guide provides insider tips, top attractions, and planning resources to ensure your perfect visit in 2026 and beyond.

The Rich History of Van Loveren: From 1937 to a Family Empire

Van Loveren’s story begins in 1937 when Hennie Retief Snr acquired a piece of land in the fertile Robertson Valley and named it after Christina van Loveren, an ancestor of his bride, Jean van Zyl. Jean, a teacher from Ashton, married Hennie in 1939 and became the beloved matriarch who shaped the family’s values and traditions that still guide the estate today.

The farm was originally called Goudmyn F. Jean persuaded her husband to rename it to honour her ancestor, Christina van Loveren, who arrived in South Africa from Holland in 1699 with her husband, Willem van Zyl. A treasured bridal chest belonging to Christina still resides on the property. It symbolises the deep roots and continuity of the family legacy.

Over three generations, the Retief family transformed the estate. Hennie and Jean’s sons, Wynand and Nico, later expanded operations, and today the winery is proudly run by the “Four Cousins” – Hennie, Bussell, Phillip, and Neil Retief. Under their leadership, Van Loveren has grown dramatically from producing just 500 cases annually in the early days to becoming one of South Africa’s largest independent wine companies, farming over 1,400 hectares and owning additional respected brands.

This multi-generational dedication to quality, innovation, and community has earned Van Loveren its reputation as South Africa’s leading family-owned wine estate.

The Retief Family Legacy: Three Generations of Passion and Values

At Van Loveren, family is not just a word – it is the heartbeat of everything they do. The brand symbol VRL (Van Loveren Retief Legacy) represents the commitment and shared values that bind the family and their extended team.

Jean Retief’s influence lives on in the historic gardens she planted in 1939. Each tree tells a story of family milestones or significant events. The Four Cousins embody a modern but respectful continuation of this legacy. Visitors often remark on the genuine warmth and personal touch. The winery is still owned and operated by the same family after nearly 90 years. This authentic hospitality makes Van Loveren a perfect stop on any Wine Valley Safari experience.

Location and How to Reach Van Loveren from Cape Town or Along Route 62

Van Loveren is in the Robertson Valley, which is part of the Breede River Valley wine region. It is located between Robertson and Bonnievale along scenic Route 62. The estate is about 180 km from Cape Town, making it great for half-day or full-day trips.

The drive from Cape Town takes about two hours via the N1 and R60. The route passes through stunning mountain passes and vineyards. For those travelling the world’s longest wine route, Route 62, Van Loveren is a natural and welcoming stop.
